Philosophy

We believe a web site for an average small business, or a simple home page should be affordable, readable, and very functional.  Too many sites out there are expensive, cluttered, and rely too much on "cool" techno-junk that ends up selling …well, techno-junk, and not conveying the message that the site is expected to convey.  "Cool" can sometimes look unusable when you are trying to give your customers information, not entertainment.

Being a local small business, saving money is very important for you, so we believe affordable basic web design should not mean boring and bland, and should certainly not mean, cheap-looking, but should be "affordably pleasing" to the eye, and be informative in a simplistic way.  Your message is the most important reason for having a web site in the first place, and it is the first impression people see of your business when they visit you online.

If you have never had a web site before, you must obtain a domain name.  This name is merely a web address that will enable viewers to visit the server holding your business message.  We believe the best way to do this is to register a domain name with your business name, or a close variation of it, so that a “branding” option will surface.

While some thumb their noses at “free hosting” registrars of domain names, we encourage the cost savings by initially starting out this way, even though it limits the technical latitude, such as CGI (Common Gateway Interface.) forms scripting, and other plug-in (techno-junk) components your site can have, but there are other third party free hosting programs that can be used for those if you wish to have them. The drawback is having the hosts banner ad at the top and bottom, and a bandwidth limitation.  If you have a commercial ISP (internet service provider) you like, they can most likely host your domain name (site) for a monthly charge, and doing that would likely enable your site to have more technical latitude, and more bandwidth.

We believe your web site should reflect your business’ personality and the customers you cater to, so  for this reason, you should be involved in the design preparation of the message content for the site, because you know your business better than we do, and the quicker you can assist us, the cheaper it'll be for you in the end.

Service

Our free initial consultation will establish what you want (or don’t want), and what limitations either side will have.  You may say that is part of the “free” in “Free Gravity”, firmly grounding your web site expectations.  Our rates are based on a $30 flat hourly charge, with a minimum of 1 hour.  We are open to negotiate a packaged rate with monthly maintenance fees too. When you decide to employ us, we will ask you to fill out a registration form, and we will ask you for a non-refundable 10 hours of work up-front fee to start the web site.

We will first ask you if you have a domain name.  Virtual names you might have free with your ISP are not a worthy investment, because they are usually exceedingly long and not very memorable with the customers you want to continue to visit your web site.

(Virtual name example) [ http://www.yourisp.net/pub023~/yourname.html.These are never transferable to another domain name server, and they are certainly not individualized.  Who will ever remember where to find you?

We will recommend, and direct you to obtain a domain name through a registrar, we know as reliable for only $15 (USD per year), they also free-host sites and they’re not too intrusive with multiple pop-up ads.  Their option gives un-limited bandwidth, with 25 Megs storage, as long as you carry their banner.  If you wish to have that name hosted with your ISP, you must arrange that with them, and either way, you must provide us with a password, and username for us to send content to the server to form the web site via FTP (file transfer protocol).  We prefer you to register the domain name online, and we will walk you through it, but if we must register with our  credit card, there will be a surcharge of $50 (Cdn) added to what the domain name registration costs.

If you wish us to arrange for the registration of a domain name online for you, it will cost you more as an extra charge.

We will ask you to send to us by e-mail / in person / or by fax, detailed written content about your business, or service, a little about yourself, contact information, any logos, or pictures you want us to use for the web site.  We will also provide some basic graphics, and will remake, or make you a logo if you wish, and we will design the structure and re-work the content you give us into a web design that will capture your business' personality and the look your customers expect.  We will individualize your site, but use a basic structure we use to design them.

We will make backup copies of graphics and the web pages, and for $50, we will give you the copies when you no longer need our service.  We will submit your new web site to the major search engines, and we will allow you to see individual, or multiple pages on the Internet before it becomes your official page, so that you may request any changes.  This you can view from home, or your business by logging on to the Internet, and giving you an address to view them.

If you wish us to maintain the content on your web site, it is understood that this commitment will be for at least a year at a time, or a small closing charge of $50 will be levied.  It is up to you to give us the up-dated content, or any changes you want made anytime, and those changes should be made within 24 hours of us receiving them, unless otherwise notified.

Remember, we provide an affordable  & basic web design service, not an advanced expensive web design service.

A basic web site can take me anywhere from 3 days to four weeks to complete, depending on the amount of information a client needs.  That's why you, the client, are involved in supplying the information for the site.  If I have to "fish", it takes longer.  Once the site is made, it's just a matter of minor tuning, and up-dating every so often for the maintenance, so the expense of a web site drops almost to nothing, unless you want it totally re-made again.

I tend to do a lot of un-timed extras (therefore free) to fine-tune to my liking, and hopefully the client's, so I'm very flexible on the work I do.
